THE SPEED-UP ROUND
DING-DING-DING! DING-DING-DING! You know want that sound means! That's
the sound that time is running out and Chuck has to give the "Wheel" a
final spin. He'll ask you for a letter and if it's in the puzzle, you'll
get five seconds to solve it. Vowels are worth nothing and consonants are
worth...well, you know the rest....The Speed-Up Round was a whole other
experience during the Chuck and Susan years of "Wheel". Here's why!
SPLIT SCREEN SET UP
In the "classic" episodes, the split screen was slightly different
than the one we see today. The split screen had the contestants on the
bottom half of the screen while the puzzle board was placed on the top
half of the screen. Pretty spiffy!
THE FINAL SPIN
 
The way the "final spin" was set up was really cool in the episode
which I saw. It may seem contrived and all set up but hey, it was fun to
watch. Here's how it worked:
- The bell rings. Chuck announces that he's going to give the wheel "a final
spin of the day."
- Chuck licks his finger, scopes out the $2000 space on the wheel, points
at the space, and proceeds to aim for it.
- Meanwhile, Susan, the cheerleader that she is, roots Chuck on shouting,
"Make it big, Chuck! C'mon, let's go! Lots of money!"
- Upon seeing that he won't hit a big number, Chuck hopes he gets a BANKRUPT
and does. When he lands on the BANKRUPT, they actually activate the sound
effect.
- On the second spin, Chuck gets $350 responding with, "That's the pits!"
THE PUZZLE
Here are some more Susan-isms that popped up during the Speed-up
Round:
- Upon turning a letter she does a little turn herself and leans back
- She joins in on the hosting saying things like "No 'J'" or "No 'N'" and
waving her finger as if to say "no-no" to the contestants.
- She also points at the contestant whoever is in control.
- Susan walks backwards after turning a couple of letters
- When the puzzle is solved, she turns over all the letters and bows to the
winner!
